REPUBLIC SQUARE
Republic Square or The New Square is Almaty’s main and central squares which is used for public events. This square had the former Presidential Palace which is now used as Municipal offices along with the Akimat House, The Monument of Independence, The Central State Museum and many other influential buildings of the area. The Square was created because due to increase of population, the old square could not accommodate people during festival and other events. Hence the new Square or the Republic Square was opened in 1980 and ever since has served an area for celebrations, mass parades, rallies, festivals. To make it more beautiful, the area was decorated with lush green cover of deciduous and coniferous trees.
